APRICITY

Apricity is an old English word that means “the warmth of the sun on a cold winter’s day.” Apricity began in 2014 when three work friends (Kathie, Mike, and Pablo) discovered that they all played instruments and got together for a casual jam session. Before long, the jam sessions became a regular occurrence and they brought in a couple other friends (Gilan and Ting) to complete the band. After a year or two of playing covers, Gilan led Apricity to begin writing original songs, and they decided to perform their first show in early 2017. Since then, they have played numerous shows at famous venues across the city such as The Bitter End, Pianos, Parkside Lounge, The Delancey, and Prohibition, with the goal of bringing the feeling of “apricity” to their fans!

kathie chang

From an early start tickling the ivories of a classical piano at the tender age of 5, to an unexpected twist in high school where Kathie swapped Chopin for power chords, her musical journey has always been an adventure. After college, the itch to make music resurfaced, and fate led Kathie to jam with two fellow music enthusiasts, Pablo and Michael. Little did we know that this casual jam would ignite a fire - the birth of something incredible, our band Apricity!

gilan salehi

Gilan was writing songs long before he could sing them. His passion for music was truly ignited when he set aside the piano and picked up the guitar, forgoing formal lessons to pursue his personal curiosity, wherever it may lead. Eventually, it lead to a house party in Brooklyn, then a jam sesh in Soho, then another, then a show in Hell's Kitchen, and finally: Apricity.

ting guo

Ting is the bassist for Apricity. She grew up playing piano and rotated through the flute, trumpet and classical guitar before being thrown a bass and forced into her local church band. Well hallelujah, it was a match made in heaven! In 2016, Kathie invited Ting to join a casual jam session, and not too long afterwards, a band was born! It’s been quite a ride, but Ting has loved every second of jamming out with and creating bass lines for Apricity.

michael clemente

Mike is the lead guitarist of Apricity. While he grew up playing piano, in his rebellious teenage years he decided he'd rather play guitar and never looked back. In college, he formed and played lead guitar in the curiously-named band Flying Burning Sharks. In 2014, he met up with work friends Kathie and Pablo for a casual jam, and the rest is history. As a little kid, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, his immediate answer was, "Rockstar!" He's so happy that he gets to live out his childhood dreams in Apricity.

pablo ortega

Pablo has never owned a drum set! His journey in music began at the age of 9 when his younger brother received a drum set for Christmas. He picked up the rhythm and joined his brother in jam sessions inspired by Nirvana. By the time he turned 13, Pablo's musical path took a significant turn as he formed his first band, Strutter. Over the years, the band's name evolved, becoming 32 and ultimately transforming into Ozone. Notably, Ozone achieved a milestone by winning a Battle of the Bands competition in Bolivia, securing valuable studio time to record their debut EP. Ozone's success extended beyond the studio, as they had the privilege of opening for renowned bands in Bolivia and even secured radio airplay for their singles. The band's presence further expanded with a TV performance. Following his high school graduation, Pablo temporarily stepped away from drumming, taking a decade-long hiatus before embarking on an exciting journey with Apricity in New York City.
